A detail from the Maestà altarpiece by Duccio, depicting the biblical narrative of the raising of Lazarus with characteristic Sienese gold-ground style.
This panel is a component of the Maestà, the large altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the Sienese School, employed tempera and gold leaf to articulate this biblical narrative. The composition depicts the moment Christ commands Lazarus to emerge from the tomb. Lazarus stands upright, wrapped in burial linens, positioned within the dark aperture of the sepulchre. Christ, draped in a blue mantle over a red tunic, gestures towards the figure. A crowd of onlookers, including the apostles, gathers to the left, their expressions conveying a mixture of awe and apprehension.
The background features stylised rocky formations and two small trees, set against a flat gold ground. This use of gold is characteristic of the period, providing a non-naturalistic, celestial atmosphere that separates the scene from earthly reality. The figures are arranged with a sense of spatial order, though the perspective remains flattened by modern standards. Duccio focuses on the emotional response of the participants, particularly in the gestures of the figures surrounding Christ. The colour palette is dominated by the deep blue of Christ's robe, the warm red of his tunic and the kneeling figure, and the muted earth tones of the rocky landscape. The work demonstrates the transition from the rigid Byzantine tradition towards a more humanistic approach in Italian painting. The attention to the physical form of the figures and the narrative clarity are hallmarks of Duccio's contribution to the development of Western art. This print captures the precise detail of the original tempera application, preserving the texture of the gold leaf and the subtle variations in the pigments used for the drapery and facial features.
