Luca Giordano's "Raising of Lazarus" is a Baroque painting depicting the biblical scene where Jesus Christ raises Lazarus from the dead. Giordano, a prolific Neapolitan painter, was known for his speed and facility, earning him the nickname "Luca fa presto" (Luca paints quickly). His style is characterised by its dynamism, dramatic lighting, and rich colour. Giordano's work often blends Venetian colourism with the energetic compositions of the Roman Baroque. The painting captures the moment of Lazarus's resurrection. Christ stands at the centre, gesturing towards the tomb, while Lazarus emerges, pale and seemingly bewildered. Surrounding them are onlookers, their faces expressing a range of emotions from awe to disbelief. The composition is arranged to draw the viewer's eye towards the central figures, with strong diagonals and a theatrical use of light and shadow. The colour palette is warm, with golds, reds, and browns dominating, while the figures are rendered with a naturalism typical of Baroque art, emphasising their humanity and emotional response to the miracle.
