Nainsukh
A refined ink drawing by the Pahari master Nainsukh, depicting a narrative scene from the Ramayana with characteristic fluid line work.
This work by Nainsukh, a master of the Pahari school, depicts a scene from the Ramayana. The composition shows Rama and his brother Lakshmana engaging with an ascetic in a forest setting. Nainsukh is recognised for his departure from the more stylised conventions of his contemporaries, opting instead for a naturalistic approach to human gesture and interaction. The figures are rendered with precise, fluid lines that capture the quiet gravity of the encounter. The scene is framed within a simple border, typical of preparatory drawings or sketches from the period. To the left, a mounted figure waits, while the central figures sit in conversation upon the ground. The background is suggested through minimal foliage, allowing the focus to remain on the exchange between the prince and the sage. The use of a monochromatic palette, likely iron gall ink or a similar brown pigment, emphasises the calligraphic quality of the artist's hand. Nainsukh worked primarily in the Punjab Hills, serving various patrons in the courts of Jasrota and Guler. His ability to convey psychological depth through subtle shifts in posture and gaze distinguishes his output. This drawing offers a view into the artist's process, showing how he constructed narrative scenes before the application of colour. The work reflects the broader tradition of Indian miniature painting, yet it maintains a distinct clarity that is characteristic of Nainsukh's personal style. It provides an opportunity to observe the draftsmanship behind the more finished, opaque watercolour works for which the Pahari school is known.
