This miniature painting originates from the Guler school of Pahari art, attributed to the master artist Manaku. It depicts a specific episode from the Ramayana, the ancient Sanskrit epic. The narrative focuses on the Siege of Lanka, where Rama, the blue-skinned protagonist, interacts with Shuka and Sarana, spies sent by the demon king Ravana.

The composition is divided into two distinct zones. On the left, a fortified palace structure houses Ravana, who is shown with his characteristic multiple heads. The architecture is rendered with flat, geometric precision, typical of the period. To the right, the scene shifts to an outdoor setting where Rama sits amongst his army of monkeys. The figures are arranged in a clear, narrative sequence, allowing the viewer to follow the interaction between the central characters.

Manaku employs a palette of earthy tones, punctuated by the deep blue of Rama and the bright red border that frames the entire work. The treatment of the monkeys is particularly notable, as they are depicted in a dense, repetitive formation that creates a sense of scale and urgency. The trees and foliage at the base of the composition provide a decorative grounding for the scene, while the flat application of colour maintains the two-dimensional quality inherent to this tradition of Indian painting.
