A dramatic seventeenth-century Rajasthani miniature from the Bundi school, depicting a royal hunt in a dark, atmospheric forest setting.
This work originates from the Bundi school of painting, a tradition within the broader Rajasthani style of Indian miniature art. It depicts a dramatic hunting scene involving Rao Raja Bhoj Singh, a ruler of the Bundi state. The composition centres on a large tree, which serves as a platform for the royal hunter and his attendant. The ruler is shown striking a tiger with the butt of his musket, while the animal leaps upwards towards the branches. Below, a fallen horse lies on the ground, indicating the danger posed by the predator.
The painting employs a dark, atmospheric palette, with deep forest greens and shadows that contrast with the golden tones of the tiger and the decorative rug draped over the branch. The figures are rendered with the characteristic precision of the Bundi school, which often favoured expressive, dynamic subjects. The artist uses fine brushwork to delineate the tiger's stripes and the textures of the foliage. The scene is framed by a simple border, typical of the period's manuscript illustrations.
Such paintings were often commissioned for royal albums, documenting the prowess and bravery of the local nobility. The Bundi style is recognised for its specific approach to nature, often incorporating stylised trees and lush, dark backgrounds that create a sense of enclosure. This particular piece captures a moment of high tension, balancing the controlled posture of the hunter with the kinetic energy of the tiger. It provides a glimpse into the courtly life and hunting traditions of seventeenth-century Rajasthan, where such displays of skill were highly valued. The use of gold highlights adds a layer of refinement to the otherwise rugged subject matter, reflecting the status of the patron.
