This oil on canvas painting by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff depicts the Italian coastal town of Rapallo with a distinctive Expressionist sensibility. The scene is rendered with thick, impasto brushstrokes, creating a textured surface that animates the water and buildings.
Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, a German Expressionist painter and printmaker, was a founding member of the artist group Die Brücke (The Bridge). His work is characterised by bold colours, simplified forms, and an emotional intensity that reflects the anxieties of the early 20th century. Schmidt-Rottluff's artistic journey took him through various phases, from early Impressionistic influences to a mature Expressionist style that embraced abstraction and distortion to convey inner states. He was deeply affected by the two World Wars, which led to periods of artistic suppression and personal reflection. 'Rapallo, Grey Day' depicts the Italian coastal town with a distinctive Expressionist sensibility. The scene is rendered with thick, impasto brushstrokes, creating a textured surface that animates the water and buildings. The colour palette is dominated by blues and greys, evoking a sense of overcast weather and a subdued atmosphere. Boats bob gently in the harbour, while buildings cluster along the shoreline, their forms simplified and abstracted. The composition is dynamic, with the interplay of light and shadow adding depth and visual interest. The painting captures the essence of Rapallo, conveying its charm and character through the artist's unique vision.
