An 18th-century etching by Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich depicting an itinerant rat catcher with his dog and equipment.
Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich, also known as Dietricy, was a prolific German artist who gained favour in the eighteenth century for his ability to emulate the styles of Dutch and Flemish masters. This etching, dated 1757, depicts a rat catcher, a common figure in European genre art of the period. The subject stands with a staff topped by a cage containing a live rat, while dead rodents hang from the structure. A small dog sits at his feet, and the man gestures with an object in his raised hand, his expression animated as if he is calling out to potential customers.
Dietrich employs a precise etching technique to define the textures of the man's fur-lined cloak, his worn clothing, and the rough wood of the staff. The composition is balanced, with the figure occupying the centre of the frame against a relatively sparse background. This allows the viewer to focus on the details of the rat catcher's attire and the tools of his trade. The work reflects the interest in character studies and street life that occupied many artists during the Enlightenment. Dietrich was particularly skilled in the medium of printmaking, and his works were widely collected across Europe during his lifetime. This print demonstrates his technical control and his interest in the picturesque aspects of everyday life. The inclusion of the dog and the specific accoutrements of the rat catcher provide a narrative quality to the image, suggesting a moment captured from the daily routine of an itinerant worker. The etching is signed and dated in the lower margin, a common practice for Dietrich, who took pride in his graphic output.
