A refined 1831 oil portrait by Thomas Sully, depicting the Philadelphia philanthropist Rebecca Gratz with characteristic Romantic softness and clarity.
Thomas Sully, a prominent figure in nineteenth-century American portraiture, painted this likeness of Rebecca Gratz in 1831. Gratz was a notable educator and philanthropist in Philadelphia, recognised for her work in establishing the Female Hebrew Benevolent Society. Sully captures her with a soft, atmospheric quality that defines his mature style. The portrait focuses on the sitter's direct gaze and composed expression, framed by the dark, ringlet curls popular during the period.
The technical execution demonstrates Sully's proficiency with light and shadow. He employs a warm, amber-toned background that pushes the figure forward, creating a sense of depth without the need for complex environmental details. The white, pleated ruff collar provides a stark contrast to the darker tones of her hair and the muted background, drawing the viewer's eye to the face. Sully's brushwork is fluid, particularly in the rendering of the skin tones and the delicate fabric of the collar, which suggests a lightness of touch characteristic of his later works.
This portrait is often associated with the literary figure Rebecca from Sir Walter Scott's novel, Ivanhoe. It is widely believed that Gratz served as the inspiration for the character, a connection that added to the public interest in her image during the nineteenth century. The painting remains a clear example of the American Romantic approach to portraiture, where the artist seeks to convey the character and temperament of the subject through subtle modulation of light and a focus on the sitter's internal presence. The work is currently held in the collection of the Rosenbach Museum and Library in Philadelphia, where it continues to be studied for its historical and aesthetic qualities.
