A delicate pen and watercolour drawing by Elias van Nijmegen depicting the biblical meeting of Rebekah and Eliezer at the well.
This work by Elias van Nijmegen depicts the biblical encounter between Rebekah and Eliezer at the well. The scene captures the moment Rebekah offers water to Abraham's servant, a narrative frequently explored in Dutch art of the period. Van Nijmegen employs a fluid, calligraphic line to define the figures, while the application of watercolour provides a subtle tonal range that suggests depth without relying on heavy shading.
The composition is structured around the well, which serves as the physical and narrative anchor for the interaction. To the left, the presence of camels indicates the arrival of Eliezer's caravan, adding a sense of place to the encounter. The artist uses a light, airy palette, typical of his preparatory sketches and drawings, which allows the ink work to remain the primary focus. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace, reflecting the classical influences present in Dutch art during the early eighteenth century.
Elias van Nijmegen, a painter and draughtsman from Nijmegen, was known for his decorative work and his ability to integrate classical motifs into biblical subjects. This drawing demonstrates his facility with the pen, showing how he could convey complex narratives through economical mark-making. The work is framed by a simple ink border, a common practice for drawings intended for study or collection. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, revealing the texture and quality of the original support. This print captures the spontaneity of the artist's hand, offering a view into the creative process of a Dutch master.
