A wood engraving by Winslow Homer from 1862, depicting Confederate soldiers on a night reconnaissance mission during the American Civil War.
This wood engraving, published in Harper's Weekly on 17 May 1862, captures a scene from the American Civil War. Winslow Homer, working as a special correspondent for the periodical, produced this image during his time at the front lines near Yorktown, Virginia. The composition depicts Confederate soldiers engaged in a night-time reconnaissance mission. The figures are positioned behind a wooden fence, their forms partially obscured by the darkness of the woods.
The primary visual element is the use of light. Two soldiers hold dark lanterns, their beams cutting through the gloom to illuminate the surrounding foliage and the faces of their companions. This contrast between the deep shadows and the sharp, directional light creates a sense of tension and immediacy. Homer focuses on the practical details of the soldiers' equipment and their posture, avoiding the romanticised depictions of combat common in other media of the period.
As a wood engraving, the work relies on a system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to suggest texture and depth. The surrounding text from the original publication, including the masthead of Harper's Weekly, provides the historical context of the image as a piece of contemporary reportage. Homer's ability to convey the atmosphere of the camp and the quiet intensity of military life is evident here. This print offers a glimpse into the methods used by nineteenth-century illustrators to bring news of the war to a public audience. The work remains a primary document of the conflict, reflecting the observational approach that would later define Homer's career in painting and watercolour.
