An early modernist study by Marc Chagall, depicting a reclining figure in a warm, expressive interior setting.
This work, produced during Marc Chagall's early period in Paris, captures a departure from the folk-inspired themes often associated with his later career. The composition features a reclining female figure positioned upon a chaise longue, rendered with the expressive, non-naturalistic distortion characteristic of his formative years in the French capital. The figure is elongated and angular, with anatomical proportions adjusted to suit the emotional weight of the scene rather than objective reality.
Behind the figure, a vase of flowers sits upon a small table, providing a contrast to the warm, earthy tones of the interior. The palette is dominated by ochres, deep reds, and browns, which create a sense of intimacy within the domestic space. Chagall employs a visible, energetic brushwork that defines the contours of the body and the folds of the drapery. The background is simplified, allowing the focus to remain on the interaction between the subject and the surrounding environment.
Unlike the dreamlike, floating figures that populate his later output, this piece demonstrates a grounded, physical presence. It reflects the influence of the various avant-garde movements circulating in Paris at the time, such as Fauvism and early Cubism, yet it retains a distinct personal quality. The artist uses colour to establish mood, with the deep red curtain providing a stark backdrop that pushes the figure forward. This print offers a view into the experimental phase of an artist who would go on to define much of twentieth-century visual culture through his unique synthesis of memory, folklore, and personal experience.
