A 1917 oil painting by Amedeo Modigliani, featuring a reclining figure rendered with the artist's characteristic elongated forms and warm, earthy palette.
Amedeo Modigliani painted this work in 1917, a period during which he produced a series of reclining nudes for his dealer, Léopold Zborowski. The composition features a figure stretched across the canvas, resting against a bright blue cushion that provides a sharp chromatic contrast to the warm, ochre tones of the skin and the dark, atmospheric background. Modigliani employs his signature stylistic approach here: the elongated neck, the almond-shaped eyes, and the simplified, mask-like facial features. These elements reflect his interest in African sculpture and the reduction of form to essential, rhythmic lines.
The figure occupies the foreground, her body angled to create a sense of relaxed repose. The brushwork is relatively smooth, yet it retains a tactile quality that defines the contours of the body without relying on traditional chiaroscuro. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist focuses the viewer on the silhouette and the psychological presence of the subject. The blue cushion acts as a structural anchor, guiding the eye along the length of the figure while separating the subject from the deep, indeterminate space behind her. This work is characteristic of the artist's mature period in Paris, where he synthesised influences from the Italian Renaissance with the avant-garde sensibilities of the early twentieth century. The painting remains a clear example of his ability to balance formal abstraction with a distinct, human sensitivity.
