A portrait of two boys and a dog in a forest setting, rendered with the bold, direct brushwork characteristic of Neil Welliver's Maine period.
Neil Welliver is recognised for his direct approach to painting, often working outdoors in the Maine woods to capture the specific light and atmosphere of the region. In Red Slips, the artist presents a portrait of two young boys accompanied by a dog, set against a dense, verdant backdrop of foliage and trees. The composition is structured by the verticality of the figures, which are placed centrally, while the dog occupies the foreground to the left.
Welliver employs a distinctive technique involving broad, confident brushstrokes that define form without relying on excessive detail. The palette is dominated by various shades of green, which unify the figures with their environment. The boys are rendered with a sense of immediacy, their expressions direct and unposed. The title refers to the bright red footwear worn by the younger child, a detail that provides a sharp chromatic contrast to the otherwise muted, earthy tones of the forest floor and the boys' clothing.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who favoured abstraction, Welliver maintained a rigorous focus on the physical world. His method often involved painting in sections, allowing him to maintain a high level of control over the application of paint while working on a large scale. The result is a work that feels both observational and constructed. The interplay between the figures and the surrounding woods suggests a familiarity with the terrain, reflecting the artist's own life in rural Maine. The painting avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a clear-eyed depiction of his subjects. The light filtering through the trees is captured through subtle variations in tone, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene.
