Description
A portrait by David Bomberg of a redheaded woman reading a book. The painting is characterised by its expressive brushwork and bold use of colour.
David Bomberg (1890-1957) was a British painter associated with the Whitechapel Boys, and later became known for his abstract compositions and portraits. He studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, where he was influenced by Walter Sickert and Spencer Gore. Bomberg's early work showed the influence of Cubism and Futurism, but he later developed a more individual style. He served in the First World War, an experience that profoundly affected his art. After the war, he travelled extensively, painting in Palestine and Spain. He taught at Borough Polytechnic, where his students included Frank Auerbach and Leon Kossoff. Bomberg's work is characterised by its expressive brushwork and bold use of colour. He sought to capture the energy and vitality of modern life. 'Redheaded Woman Reading' is a portrait of a woman seated in a chair, absorbed in a book. The sitter's red hair is a striking feature, contrasting with the muted tones of her dress and the background. Bomberg's brushstrokes are visible, adding texture and depth to the painting. The composition is simple, with the focus on the woman's face and hands. The painting conveys a sense of intimacy and quiet contemplation.
