A 1921 lithograph by George Bellows depicting a domestic scene with high-contrast shadows and a focus on everyday life.
George Bellows, a central figure in the Ashcan School, produced this lithograph in 1921. The work captures a domestic scene with a stark, observational quality. A woman lies on the floor, her leg raised in a physical exercise, while another figure rests on a bed in the background. The composition relies on high-contrast lighting, a technique Bellows mastered to create a sense of volume and atmosphere within the confined space of the room.
The print demonstrates Bellows' interest in the mundane aspects of daily life. Rather than focusing on grand narratives, he turns his attention to the private, often unglamorous moments of his subjects. The heavy use of black ink creates deep shadows, which ground the figures and define the textures of the bedding and the floor. The chair in the foreground provides a sense of scale and depth, anchoring the viewer's perspective.
Bellows was a prolific printmaker, and his work in lithography allowed him to experiment with tonal ranges that were difficult to achieve in painting. This piece reflects his ability to render human form with both anatomical precision and a sense of psychological weight. The title, Reducing Exercises, adds a layer of social commentary, referencing the contemporary obsession with physical fitness and body image that was gaining traction in the early twentieth century. The work remains a clear example of his technical skill and his commitment to depicting the realities of American life during the period.
