A 1958 abstract work by Sam Francis, featuring a dense central mass of blue pigment contrasted against warm yellow and orange tones.
Sam Francis, an American painter associated with the second generation of Abstract Expressionism, created Reefs in 1958. This work demonstrates his characteristic approach to colour and space, often described as colour field painting with a focus on the physical properties of paint. The composition features a dense, central mass of deep blue pigment, which appears to float against a surrounding field of warmer tones, including yellows and oranges.
Francis spent significant time in Paris and Japan during the 1950s, and these experiences informed his aesthetic. His technique involves layering thin washes of paint, allowing drips and runs to remain visible on the canvas surface. This method emphasises the fluidity of the medium and the process of its application. Unlike the gestural, aggressive brushwork of some of his contemporaries, Francis maintained a sense of openness and light within his compositions. The blue forms in Reefs suggest organic shapes, reminiscent of underwater structures, yet they remain firmly within the realm of non-representational art.
By leaving areas of the canvas unpainted or lightly stained, Francis creates a sense of depth that is not reliant on traditional perspective. The interaction between the cool blue centre and the warm, luminous edges creates a visual tension. This balance of colour and void is a hallmark of his practice during this period. The work invites the viewer to observe the interplay of light and pigment, rather than searching for a specific narrative or subject. It is an example of his interest in the atmospheric qualities of paint, where the canvas becomes a space for the exploration of pure colour and form.
