A classic example of Jackson Pollock's 'drip' technique, 'Reflection of the Big Dipper' features a complex layering of lines and colours, creating a dynamic abstract composition.
Jackson Pollock (1912-1956) was a major figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. His radical approach to painting broke conventions and helped shift the centre of the art world from Paris to New York in the post-war era. Pollock is best known for his 'drip' technique, where he moved around a canvas laid on the floor, flinging and pouring paint from above. This process, which he termed 'action painting', emphasised the physical act of creation. 'Reflection of the Big Dipper' exemplifies Pollock's signature style. A complex network of black lines dominates the composition, interspersed with pools and splatters of yellow, white, and hints of red and blue. The layering creates a sense of depth, despite the overall flatness. The absence of a clear focal point encourages the eye to move across the entire surface, engaging with the energy and spontaneity of the artist's process. The title suggests a connection to the cosmos, but the painting remains resolutely abstract, inviting individual interpretation.
