A detailed historical engraving by Jan Goeree documenting the 1544 layout of the Regulierspoort and Amsterdam's defensive fortifications.
This engraving by Jan Goeree depicts the Regulierspoort, a medieval gatehouse in Amsterdam, as it appeared in 1544. Goeree, a prolific Dutch draughtsman and engraver, produced this work as part of a historical series documenting the architectural evolution of the city. The composition employs a cartographic approach, presenting a bird's-eye view of the fortifications, the Amstel river, and the surrounding structures.
The central portion of the print is framed by a trompe-l'oeil curtain, a common device in seventeenth-century printmaking to suggest a view through a window or a display of historical documents. Within this oval frame, Goeree provides a schematic layout of the gate, the Roodebrug, and the Halfrond, complete with a numbered legend for clarity. Below this diagram, the artist includes a more conventional panoramic view of the city skyline, showing the gatehouse in its broader urban context.
Goeree demonstrates technical precision in his use of line work, particularly in the rendering of the architectural forms and the subtle shading of the water. The print serves as a record of Amsterdam's defensive infrastructure before the city's rapid expansion. By combining a technical map with a scenic view, the artist provides both a functional reference and a visual narrative of the city's past. The inclusion of the date 1544 within the central medallion indicates that the work is a retrospective reconstruction rather than a contemporary observation of the site. This piece is characteristic of the period's interest in historical documentation and the systematic recording of urban topography.
