An etching by Allaert van Everdingen depicting a scene from the Reynard the Fox cycle, where the fox feigns death to deceive his prey.
This etching by Allaert van Everdingen depicts a scene from the medieval beast epic, Reynard the Fox. The narrative follows the cunning fox, Reynard, who lies on the ground in a feigned state of death to deceive his prey. The composition captures the moment before the fox springs into action, with birds circling nearby, unaware of the ruse. In the background, a church spire rises above the horizon, providing a sense of place within the Dutch countryside.
Van Everdingen, primarily known for his depictions of Scandinavian scenery and rocky terrain, demonstrates his technical skill in this work through the use of fine, hatched lines to create texture and depth. The etching style is characteristic of the mid-seventeenth century, where artists often combined naturalistic observation with allegorical or literary themes. The inclusion of a cart and the skeletal remains of a wheel in the upper right corner adds a grim, rustic quality to the scene, typical of the period's interest in moralising tales and the harsh realities of nature.
As a printmaker, Van Everdingen utilised the etching process to achieve a fluid, sketch-like quality that captures the movement of the birds and the stillness of the fox. The work reflects the broader interest in the Reynard cycle, which remained a popular subject for artists and writers throughout the Dutch Golden Age. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of folklore and print culture, where traditional stories were reinterpreted through the lens of contemporary artistic practice. The attention to detail, from the foliage to the atmospheric clouds, provides a clear example of the artist's ability to construct a compelling narrative within a small format.
