A traditional Ming Dynasty painting depicting a formal court scene where officials offer counsel to an emperor.
This work by the Ming Dynasty painter Liu Jun depicts a formal court scene involving a ruler and his advisors. The composition centres on the emperor, who is seated before a large screen, flanked by attendants holding ceremonial fans. Before him, a group of officials kneels in a gesture of petition or remonstrance, a common theme in traditional Chinese court painting that explores the relationship between sovereign authority and the duty of the scholar-official to offer counsel.
Liu Jun, active during the mid-to-late fifteenth century, is known for his adherence to the professional styles of the imperial court. The painting employs a muted palette of earth tones, ochre, and soft greens, characteristic of the period's silk-based works. The figures are rendered with precise, controlled brushwork, defining their robes and postures with clarity. The setting includes pine trees and floral elements, which provide a natural frame for the human drama unfolding in the foreground. The use of space is balanced, with the architectural screen acting as a visual anchor that separates the emperor from the surrounding environment.
This piece reflects the conventions of Ming court art, where narrative clarity and the depiction of social hierarchy were paramount. The artist manages the interaction between the various figures through subtle gestures and eye contact, creating a sense of quiet tension. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden tone, which softens the overall appearance of the pigments. This print captures the fine details of the original brushwork, from the textures of the pine bark to the folds of the officials' garments, offering a view into the formalised world of the Ming imperial court.
