Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat first achieved notoriety as part of the graffiti duo SAMO©, spray-painting cryptic epigrams in the cultural hub of Lower Manhattan during the late 1970s. By the 1980s, he was exhibiting his neo-expressionist paintings in galleries and museums internationally. 'Replicas' is a characteristic example of Basquiat's style, combining raw, childlike imagery with textual fragments and social commentary. The work features a dense layering of symbols, words, and figures rendered in a seemingly spontaneous manner. Scrawled text references historical figures like Malcolm X and cultural icons such as Al Jolson, alongside commercial slogans and cryptic phrases. The composition includes motifs such as crowns, automobiles, and anatomical sketches, all executed with bold, energetic lines and a limited colour palette.
