A woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I, this artwork depicts a scene from the Kabuki play _Dōjōji_, using a composition of fans with floral and geometric patterns.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769-1825) captures a scene from the popular Kabuki play, _Dōjōji_. Toyokuni I was a leading printmaker of the Utagawa school, known for his depictions of Kabuki actors and beautiful women. His work helped to define the visual culture of the late Edo period in Japan. _Dōjōji_ is a classic of the Kabuki repertoire, telling the story of a woman scorned who transforms into a serpent and wreaks havoc at Dōjōji Temple. The print presents a stylised composition, with the figure of the dancer suggested through a series of fans. Each fan displays different motifs and patterns, including floral designs, geometric shapes, and text. The dancer is suggested by the fan at the centre, which shows a figure in costume. The colour palette is muted, with soft creams, greens, and browns creating a serene atmosphere. The calligraphic text adds another layer of visual interest, typical of Ukiyo-e prints. The composition is flat, typical of Japanese woodblock prints, which emphasises surface pattern and design over depth.
