A delicate etching by Jan Miel depicting the Holy Family resting during their flight to Egypt, rendered with the informal, human touch of the Baroque era.
This etching by Jan Miel depicts the Holy Family during their journey to Egypt. Miel, a Flemish artist who spent much of his career in Rome, was known for his ability to capture informal, human moments within traditional religious subjects. Unlike the grand, theatrical compositions common in the Baroque period, this work focuses on a quiet, domestic scene. The Virgin Mary sits on the ground, cradling the infant Jesus, while Joseph rests nearby. A donkey, essential to the narrative of their flight, stands behind them, grounding the scene in a sense of weary reality.
The technique displays the characteristic freedom of Miel's etching style. He uses varied line weights to define the forms of the figures and the textures of their garments. The shading is achieved through a combination of cross-hatching and looser, more spontaneous strokes, which provide a sense of volume and depth without relying on heavy, dark areas. The composition is contained within a soft, organic space, suggesting a moment of respite beneath the shelter of a tree.
Miel was associated with the Bamboccianti, a group of artists in Rome who preferred to paint scenes of everyday life rather than idealised historical or mythological subjects. This influence is visible here, as the figures appear as ordinary travellers rather than divine icons. The focus remains on the physical exhaustion and the intimate connection between the parents and their child. The print offers a glimpse into the technical skill of a seventeenth-century master who balanced his training in the Flemish tradition with the stylistic developments he encountered in Italy. It is a study in simplicity, capturing a brief pause in a long and difficult journey.
