A 19th-century albumen print by Giorgio Sommer documenting the architectural ruins of the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii.
This albumen print by Giorgio Sommer captures the House of the Tragic Poet in Pompeii, a site excavated in the 19th century. Sommer, a German photographer based in Naples, operated one of the most prolific studios in Italy during this period. His work provided European audiences with a visual record of archaeological discoveries, documenting the structural remains of Roman domestic architecture.
The composition focuses on the atrium and the peristyle of the residence. The viewer observes the remnants of columns, the impluvium, and the weathered masonry of the walls. Sommer utilised the long exposure times of the era to achieve a high degree of clarity, capturing the textures of the stone and the play of light across the ruins. The image reflects the mid-19th-century interest in classical antiquity, a period when the Grand Tour and archaeological study shaped the European understanding of Roman life.
Sommer's documentation of Pompeii was widely distributed through catalogues and travel albums. His technical approach prioritised topographical accuracy, allowing for the study of spatial relationships within the ancient structure. The print retains the original mount, which includes the photographer's inventory number, 5317, and the location title. This archival quality makes the piece a record of both the site as it appeared in the late 1800s and the development of photographic documentation techniques in the field of archaeology.
