Description
A fine art print of Jacopo Pontormo's Resurrection, capturing the ethereal, elongated figures and distinct Mannerist style of the late Renaissance.
This work is a detail from the fresco cycle originally located in the choir of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence. Jacopo Pontormo, a central figure of the Florentine Mannerist movement, executed this commission during his final years. The composition depicts the risen Christ hovering above a group of sleeping or startled soldiers, whose figures are arranged in a complex, non-linear fashion typical of the artist's late style. Pontormo departs from the balanced, harmonious proportions of the High Renaissance. Instead, he employs elongated forms and a palette that favours pale, luminous tones against the darker, more muted colours of the soldiers' armour and clothing. The figure of Christ is rendered with a sense of weightlessness, his body draped in simple, flowing fabric that contrasts with the dense, cluttered arrangement of the guards below. The spatial depth is intentionally compressed, creating a sense of claustrophobia that pushes the figures toward the foreground of the lunette-shaped frame. Technical analysis of the work reveals the artist's preoccupation with psychological tension and artificiality. The soldiers appear caught in a state of suspended animation, their poses twisted and their expressions ambiguous. This approach reflects the shift in artistic priorities during the mid-sixteenth century, where the focus moved away from naturalistic representation toward a more subjective, expressive interpretation of religious narratives. The fresco remains a primary example of the experimental nature of Pontormo's late career, demonstrating his departure from the established norms of his contemporaries. The work is currently housed within the Capponi Chapel context or related Florentine collections, though the original choir frescoes were largely lost or destroyed, making this surviving imagery a rare record of his final artistic output.
