A powerful social realist work by Candido Portinari, depicting the plight of migrants fleeing the drought-stricken interior of Brazil.
Candido Portinari, a central figure in twentieth-century Brazilian art, produced Retirantes in 1944. This work belongs to a series addressing the plight of migrants fleeing the drought-stricken interior of north-eastern Brazil. The composition depicts a group of displaced individuals, their bodies emaciated and their expressions marked by exhaustion. Portinari employs a muted, earthy palette to convey the harshness of the environment and the physical toll on the subjects. The figures are rendered with elongated limbs and angular forms, which amplify the sense of suffering and fragility.
In the foreground, a central figure cradles a deceased child, a motif that recurs throughout the series to communicate the human cost of environmental and social crisis. The background remains sparse, suggesting an arid, unforgiving terrain that offers no respite to the travellers. Portinari avoids sentimentality, choosing instead to present the reality of migration with directness. His approach combines elements of European modernism with a specific focus on the social conditions of his home country. The work functions as a record of the internal displacement that defined much of the mid-century Brazilian experience. By focusing on the physical state of the figures, Portinari draws attention to the vulnerability of those forced to abandon their homes. The painting remains a significant example of his ability to merge personal observation with broader social commentary, providing a visual account of a specific historical period in Brazil.
