A modernist portrait of the Brazilian writer Mário de Andrade, featuring a geometric background and precise, controlled brushwork by Lasar Segall.
This portrait depicts Mário de Andrade, a central figure in Brazilian Modernism and a close associate of the artist. Lasar Segall, a Lithuanian-born painter who settled in Brazil, captures the intellectual presence of his subject through a synthesis of European Expressionist influence and a distinctively modern aesthetic. The composition is structured around the subject's elongated facial features, rendered with a controlled, contemplative gaze. Segall employs a palette of muted tones for the suit and skin, which contrasts with the geometric, grid-like background. This backdrop, composed of rectangular blocks of colour, suggests a modern interior space while maintaining a flattened, decorative quality that directs the viewer's attention to the sitter's expression.
Segall's approach to the portrait reflects his transition from the darker, more emotive themes of his earlier European period to the clearer, more formal explorations of his Brazilian years. The brushwork is deliberate and precise, avoiding unnecessary texture to maintain a clean, graphic clarity. The tie and the pocket square provide subtle accents of pattern, adding a sense of individual character to the formal attire. By placing Andrade against a non-representational, architectural grid, Segall separates the subject from a specific narrative setting, allowing the personality of the writer and critic to occupy the frame entirely. This work remains a significant document of the cultural milieu in 1920s São Paulo, where artists and writers sought to define a new national identity through their creative output. The portrait is held in the collection of the Museu Lasar Segall in São Paulo, which preserves the artist's home and studio.
