Christopher Nevinson, a central figure in British modernism, produced this work during his service as an ambulance driver in the First World War. The image depicts a column of soldiers marching towards the front line. Nevinson employs a geometric visual language, influenced by his association with the Vorticist movement and his time in Paris, to convey the mechanical nature of industrialised warfare.
The composition relies on sharp angles and intersecting planes to suggest the rhythmic, almost robotic movement of the troops. By reducing the human form to angular shapes, Nevinson removes individual identity, presenting the soldiers as components of a larger, impersonal machine. The heavy use of cross-hatching and deep shadows creates a sense of oppressive weight, reflecting the grim reality of the conflict. The diagonal lines push the figures forward, creating a relentless momentum that draws the viewer into the scene.
