Description
Ribblehead in northern Yorkshire offers a rhythmic sweep of pale arches beneath a crag topped hill, with a little grey barn bringing scale to the green foreground.
The Settle-Carlisle Railway crosses Batty Moss at Ribblehead on a viaduct of twenty-four stone arches. Rising around 32 metres above the moor, the structure belongs to the Yorkshire Dales' Three Peaks country, where railway engineering meets an exposed upland setting.
A long curved row of arches sweeps across the middle of the green valley. Dark openings contrast with pale stone piers, while scattered farms and trees occupy the fields behind. Sheep graze near a small barn inside the foreground walls. A broad, crag-edged hill dominates the distance. Yellow-green grass and clear sunshine suggest summer under large cream clouds.
