Jacques Villon, born Gaston Émile Duchamp, was a French Cubist and abstract painter, as well as a printmaker. He was the brother of artists Marcel Duchamp and Suzanne Duchamp-Crotti. Villon developed his own style of Cubism, characterised by geometric forms and a concern with light and colour. He was influenced by the Salon Cubists, who sought to make Cubism more accessible to a wider audience. 'Rider in the Ring' exemplifies Villon's mature style. The composition features a figure on horseback rendered in a semi-abstract manner. Geometric shapes and lines define the forms, while transparent layers of colour create depth and movement. The palette is soft, with yellows, blues, and pinks blending to create a sense of light and atmosphere. The black lines add definition to the composition.
