This Pointillist painting by Henri-Edmond Cross depicts a canal in Venice, using small dots of colour to create a shimmering effect. The artwork captures the light and atmosphere of the Venetian cityscape.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter born in Douai, is known for his contribution to the Neo-Impressionist movement. He, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, developed Pointillism, a technique characterised by small, distinct dots of colour applied in patterns to form an image. Cross moved away from the more structured approach of early Pointillism, favouring looser brushwork and brighter colours in his later works. Rio San Trovaso, Venice exemplifies Cross's mature style. The painting depicts a Venetian canal scene, with buildings lining the waterway and trees along the bank. The surface is covered in small dabs of paint, creating a shimmering effect as light reflects off the water. The colour palette includes blues, greens, yellows, and oranges, contributing to the overall luminosity of the scene. The composition is divided into horizontal bands, with the buildings and trees providing vertical accents. The reflections in the water add depth and movement to the image.
