This drawing by Cornelis Claesz. van Wieringen captures a characteristic Dutch river scene from the early seventeenth century. Van Wieringen, a painter and draughtsman from Haarlem, gained recognition for his maritime subjects and his ability to render the atmospheric conditions of the coastal regions. The composition features a prominent windmill positioned on a raised bank, overlooking a waterway populated by various vessels.
The artist employs a delicate use of pen and ink, supplemented by subtle applications of grey wash to define the forms and suggest the depth of the water. The line work is economical, focusing on the essential silhouettes of the mill, the figures near the shore, and the distant ships. The inclusion of a horse-drawn cart on the left and a small boat filled with passengers on the right provides a sense of daily activity along the riverbank.
Van Wieringen often produced such sketches as independent works or as preparatory studies for his larger paintings.
