Zhao Mengfu, a scholar-official during the Yuan Dynasty, produced this circular fan painting, a format popular among the literati for its intimate scale. The composition depicts a quiet riverine scene, where the expansive water surface meets distant, softly rendered mountains. The artist employs a restrained palette, favouring muted earth tones and subtle washes of blue to define the distant peaks.

In the foreground, a cluster of trees stands upon a bank, their forms executed with precise, calligraphic brushwork.
