A vintage photochrom print by William Henry Jackson, capturing the Riverside Geyser in Yellowstone National Park in the early 1900s.
This image captures the Riverside Geyser in Yellowstone National Park, rendered through the photochrom process. William Henry Jackson, a photographer known for his extensive documentation of the American West, utilised this technique to add colour to black-and-white negatives. The process involved creating multiple lithographic stones, each corresponding to a specific colour, to produce a final print that mimics the appearance of a natural photograph.
The composition focuses on the geyser as it erupts, casting a plume of steam against the clear sky. To the left, a wooden bridge spans the river, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the rugged terrain. The surrounding forest and rocky banks are depicted with the characteristic soft, painterly quality inherent to the photochrom method. The colour palette remains grounded in natural tones, with the pale blue of the sky contrasting against the earthy hues of the mineral deposits and the dark greens of the pine trees.
Jackson was instrumental in the early promotion of Yellowstone as a national park. His photographs provided the public with a visual record of the region's geological features, which were previously known only through written accounts or sketches. This specific print reflects the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century fascination with the American wilderness. It documents the geyser's activity while demonstrating the technical capabilities of early colour reproduction. The image remains a record of the park's appearance during the early years of its administration, offering a view of the natural environment before modern infrastructure altered the site. The print is presented here as a high-quality reproduction, preserving the original tonal qualities and the specific aesthetic of the photochrom era.
