A delicate eighteenth-century watercolour by Nicolaes Aartman depicting a quiet river scene with sailing vessels and local figures.
This work by Nicolaes Aartman captures a quiet moment along a Dutch waterway. Aartman, active in the eighteenth century, produced numerous small-scale drawings that document the daily life of the Netherlands. The composition centres on a group of figures near the water, with a man standing on the bank gesturing towards the horizon while accompanied by a small dog. A rowing boat sits in the foreground, occupied by two individuals, while larger sailing vessels occupy the middle ground. The background features a faint silhouette of a town, suggesting the proximity of a bustling port or trade centre.
The technique employs delicate ink outlines filled with muted watercolour washes. This approach provides a sense of atmosphere and depth without overwhelming the paper surface. The palette remains restrained, relying on soft ochres, greys, and muted greens to define the sky and water. Aartman often signed his works with a simple 'A. fec.' as seen in the lower left corner, a common practice for artists of his period. His work reflects the continued interest in maritime subjects that defined Dutch art for generations. The scene avoids dramatic action, focusing instead on the mundane reality of river transport and local commerce. The inclusion of the dog and the casual posture of the figures adds a human element to the nautical setting. This print offers a glimpse into the observational style of Aartman, whose output remains a valuable record of eighteenth-century Dutch life. The work is presented here with the clarity of the original ink lines and the subtle tonal variations of the wash preserved for a contemporary audience.
