A study of the Parisian outskirts, this work captures the intersection of urban architecture and open space through Van Gogh's expressive brushwork.
Painted during his residence in Paris between 1886 and 1888, this work captures the outskirts of the city where urban development met the remnants of the old fortifications. Vincent van Gogh depicts a wide, dusty road stretching towards the horizon, flanked by the imposing stone walls of the ramparts on the right and open fields on the left. The composition is dominated by the expansive, turbulent sky, rendered with quick, directional brushstrokes that suggest a sense of movement and atmospheric pressure.
Van Gogh employs a palette of ochre, pale yellow, and muted blues to convey the light of a late afternoon. The figures walking along the road are small, anonymous silhouettes, providing a sense of scale to the vast, open space. The architecture in the distance, painted in warmer tones of terracotta and cream, sits quietly against the horizon line. This piece reflects the artist's experimentation with the techniques of his contemporaries, particularly the use of short, broken brushstrokes and a lighter colour palette compared to his earlier Dutch works.
The painting offers a glimpse into the transitional nature of Paris during the late nineteenth century, as the city expanded beyond its historical boundaries. The contrast between the solid, man-made structures and the open, uncultivated ground creates a tension that is characteristic of Van Gogh's observations of the urban periphery. The application of paint is direct, with the texture of the canvas visible in areas, allowing the viewer to engage with the physical process of the artist's work. This print captures the specific light and mood of the original, preserving the raw energy of Van Gogh's brushwork.
