A study of a railway underpass in Paris, rendered with the energetic brushwork and warm, earthy palette characteristic of Van Gogh's Parisian period.
Painted during his period in Paris, this work captures a railway underpass near the fortifications of the city. Vincent van Gogh applied paint with characteristic energy, using short, rhythmic strokes that define the texture of the stone walls and the surrounding foliage. The composition focuses on the dark, cavernous opening of the tunnel, which provides a stark contrast to the sun-drenched road in the foreground.
The palette is dominated by warm ochres, yellows, and earthy browns, reflecting the artist's interest in the interplay of light and shadow within an urban environment. Unlike his later, more expressive works from Arles, this piece shows a disciplined approach to structure and perspective. The presence of a single figure near the tunnel entrance adds a sense of scale and human presence to the industrial architecture.
Van Gogh often explored the outskirts of Paris, where the city met the countryside. These locations offered him a subject matter that combined modern infrastructure with natural elements. The thick application of paint, or impasto, gives the surface a tactile quality, drawing the viewer into the scene. This work demonstrates his ability to find visual interest in mundane locations through careful observation and a distinct application of colour. The painting remains a clear example of his transition from the darker tones of his early Dutch period to the brighter, more experimental style he developed while living in France.
