A geometric abstraction by Josef Albers, 'Rolled Wrongly' features two vertically oriented forms resembling wound scrolls, rendered in stark black and white. The precise lines create an illusion of three-dimensionality.
Josef Albers (1888-1976) was a German-American artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and the United States, laid the foundations for some of the most influential movements of the 20th century. Albers is perhaps best known for his abstract paintings and colour theory. He taught at the Bauhaus and Black Mountain College. His theories on colour relationships and perception had a significant impact on modern art education. His most celebrated series, Homage to the Square, explored colour interaction through simple geometric forms. 'Rolled Wrongly' presents a study in geometric abstraction, rendered in stark black and white. Two vertically oriented forms dominate the composition, each resembling a tightly wound scroll or a series of stacked cylinders. The forms are constructed from thin, precise lines, creating an illusion of three-dimensionality on a flat plane. The contrast between the white shapes and the solid black background enhances the graphic quality of the work, emphasising the interplay of positive and negative space. The composition is simple, yet the precise execution and careful arrangement of lines create a visually arresting image.
