Description
A dramatic Baroque depiction of the classical Roman Charity narrative, rendered with the characteristic chiaroscuro of the Utrecht Caravaggisti.
Hendrick ter Brugghen, a leading figure of the Utrecht Caravaggisti, painted this version of Roman Charity around 1623. The subject depicts the classical story of Pero, who visits her imprisoned father, Cimon, to provide him with nourishment. This narrative, recorded by Valerius Maximus, focuses on the act of filial piety. Ter Brugghen treats the scene with the dramatic lighting characteristic of the Caravaggesque style, employing a dark background to push the figures into the foreground.
The composition relies on the contrast between the shadowed environment and the illumination of the two main figures. Cimon, an elderly man with a grey beard, sits on the floor with his hands bound behind his back. His posture and the red cloth draped over his legs draw the eye toward the centre of the frame. Pero stands beside him, her form modelled with soft, naturalistic light that defines her silhouette against the gloom. The artist captures the quiet intensity of the interaction, avoiding excessive theatricality in favour of a grounded, human focus.
Ter Brugghen spent time in Rome, where he absorbed the influence of Caravaggio. Upon returning to the Netherlands, he adapted these techniques to suit local tastes. This work demonstrates his ability to handle complex light sources and anatomical detail. The texture of the fabric, the weight of the chains, and the physical presence of the figures demonstrate his technical precision. The painting remains a notable example of how seventeenth-century Dutch artists reinterpreted classical themes through the lens of contemporary realism. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist ensures the viewer concentrates on the emotional gravity of the encounter between father and daughter.
