A Neoclassical history painting by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, depicting the legendary Roman king Romulus following his victory over Acron.
Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres painted this work in 1812, during his time in Rome. It depicts the legendary Roman king Romulus after his triumph over Acron, the king of the Caeninenses. The composition draws heavily from classical relief sculpture, a hallmark of the Neoclassical style Ingres championed throughout his career.
In the centre, Romulus stands in a pose of victory, holding the spoils of war, specifically the armour of the defeated Acron. His posture is deliberate and statuesque, reflecting the artist's focus on linear precision and anatomical clarity. To the left, a figure carries a shield emblazoned with the she-wolf, the symbol of Rome, while the background shows the chaotic movement of a battle scene. The fallen Acron lies in the foreground, his body rendered with a focus on form and volume that contrasts with the more upright, controlled figures of the victors.
Ingres was a student of Jacques-Louis David, and this work demonstrates his adherence to the principles of the French Academy. He prioritised clear contours and a balanced arrangement of figures over the emotional turbulence favoured by the emerging Romantic movement. The palette is restrained, allowing the viewer to focus on the narrative clarity and the sculptural quality of the figures. The painting was originally intended for the Quirinal Palace in Rome, reflecting the Napoleonic interest in Roman history as a parallel to the French Empire. The work remains a clear example of the artist's technical rigour and his dedication to the traditions of classical antiquity.
