A botanical illustration of the Rosa Centifolia (cabbage rose) by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, known as the 'Raphael of flowers'. This print showcases the delicate beauty of the rose with botanical accuracy.
This print depicts the Rosa Centifolia, commonly known as the cabbage rose. Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840), a Belgian-French painter and botanist, was celebrated for his watercolours of roses, lilies, and other flowers at the Château de Malmaison, home of Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais. He was nicknamed 'the Raphael of flowers' and gained international recognition for his precise and aesthetically pleasing botanical illustrations. This particular image showcases a stem bearing several pale pink roses in various stages of bloom, from tight buds to fully opened flowers. The leaves are a deep green, and a butterfly rests on one of the lower leaves. The botanical accuracy is evident in the depiction of thorns on the stem and the detailed veining of the leaves. The print is a stipple engraving, colour-printed and finished by hand, a technique that allowed for subtle gradations of tone and colour, capturing the delicate beauty of the rose.
