A precise botanical study of the Rosa centifolia by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, featuring delicate stipple engraving and soft, naturalistic colour.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often referred to as the Raphael of flowers, produced this study of the Rosa centifolia as part of his monumental work, Les Roses. Published in Paris between 1817 and 1824, this collection remains a primary reference for botanical accuracy and aesthetic precision. Redouté served as the official court artist for Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, who maintained an extensive collection of roses at the Château de Malmaison.
The print employs the stipple engraving technique, a method that allows for subtle gradations of tone and texture. By using dots rather than continuous lines, Redouté captured the delicate translucency of the rose petals and the soft, velvety quality of the foliage. The composition is balanced, presenting the specimen against a clean, white background to ensure the viewer focuses entirely on the biological structure of the plant. A small butterfly rests on the stem, a common inclusion in botanical art of the period to suggest the natural environment of the subject.
Redouté worked closely with skilled engravers, such as Langlois, whose name appears on the print, to translate his original watercolours into reproducible plates. The result is a work that functions as both a scientific record and a decorative object. The attention to detail, from the serrated edges of the leaves to the sharp thorns on the stem, demonstrates the rigour applied to botanical documentation during the early nineteenth century. This print offers a clear view of the Cabbage Rose, known for its dense, multi-petalled structure. It is a classic example of the intersection between scientific observation and artistic refinement that defined the era of French botanical illustration.
