A precise botanical study of the Rosa Gallica, captured through the refined stipple engraving technique of Pierre-Joseph Redouté.
Pierre-Joseph Redouté, often referred to as the Raphael of flowers, produced this study of Rosa Gallica as part of his monumental three-volume work, Les Roses. Published between 1817 and 1824, this series remains a primary reference for botanical accuracy and aesthetic precision in the nineteenth century. Redouté served as the official court artist for Empress Joséphine de Beauharnais, who maintained an extensive collection of roses at the Château de Malmaison. This access allowed him to document various species with scientific rigour.
The print employs the stipple engraving technique, a method Redouté refined to capture the subtle gradations of colour and texture found in natural specimens. By using small dots rather than continuous lines, he achieved a soft, painterly quality that mimics the delicate appearance of rose petals. The composition is balanced, presenting the specimen against a neutral background to focus attention on the anatomical details of the leaves, thorns, and the bloom itself. The inclusion of buds at different stages of development provides a comprehensive view of the plant's life cycle. The text at the base, identifying the plant as Rosa Gallica officinalis, reflects the systematic approach of the period, where art and botany functioned in tandem to catalogue the natural world. This print demonstrates the technical mastery required to translate living flora into a permanent, reproducible format without sacrificing the nuance of the original subject.
