A 1914 still life by Suzanne Valadon, featuring a simple arrangement of roses in a glass vase, rendered with firm outlines and a direct, honest style.
Suzanne Valadon, a self-taught painter who began her career as a model for artists such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec, developed a distinct visual language characterised by firm outlines and a direct approach to her subjects. In this 1914 still life, she presents a modest arrangement of roses contained within a glass vessel. The composition is grounded by a patterned surface, which provides a decorative contrast to the organic forms of the flowers.
Valadon avoids the soft, atmospheric effects common to many of her contemporaries. Instead, she employs a robust application of paint and a clear, almost structural definition of form. The white and red roses are rendered with deliberate brushwork, while the glass vase allows for a glimpse of the stems within, adding a layer of transparency to the work. The plate beneath the vase acts as a circular anchor, stabilising the verticality of the flowers against the darker background.
Her palette in this piece relies on earthy tones, punctuated by the muted red of the rose petals and the cool white of the blooms. The background remains largely indistinct, ensuring the viewer focuses on the physical presence of the objects themselves. Valadon's work often reflects her interest in the tangible reality of domestic items, treated with a sense of honesty that avoids sentimentality. This painting demonstrates her ability to balance decorative elements with a rigorous, almost sculptural approach to composition. By 1914, Valadon had established a reputation for her uncompromising style, which remained independent of the prevailing avant-garde trends of the era. Her work continues to be recognised for its technical clarity and the personal perspective she brought to traditional genres like the still life.
