A still life by Russian Impressionist Konstantin Korovin, 'Roses' captures the beauty of flowers in full bloom with loose brushwork and a bright, airy palette. The painting features two vases of roses set against a backdrop of a window overlooking the sea.
Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939) was a Russian Impressionist painter, known for his contributions to stage design and his vibrant, light-filled paintings. He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, and later at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg. Korovin was associated with the Abramtsevo Colony, a group of artists who sought to revive traditional Russian arts and crafts. He spent a significant portion of his career working for the theatre, designing sets and costumes for productions at the Bolshoi Theatre and the Mariinsky Theatre. His theatrical work influenced his painting style, which became increasingly decorative and expressive. He emigrated to Paris in 1922, where he continued to paint and work in the theatre until his death. 'Roses' exemplifies Korovin's Impressionistic style, characterised by loose brushwork and a focus on capturing the fleeting effects of light and colour. The painting depicts two vases filled with roses, set against a backdrop of a window overlooking the sea. The roses themselves are rendered with a flurry of brushstrokes, capturing their delicate petals and varied hues of red, pink, and white. The table is covered with a blue and white striped cloth, which adds a sense of depth and texture to the composition. The background features a glimpse of the sea and sky, rendered in soft, muted tones, which provides a sense of atmosphere and place. The overall effect is one of spontaneity and immediacy, capturing the beauty of the roses in a moment of time.
