Description

A photographic view of the exterior of the Rothko Chapel in Houston, the site-specific home to fourteen of Mark Rothko's large-scale abstract paintings.

The Rothko Chapel, located in Houston, Texas, is a non-denominational sanctuary commissioned by John and Dominique de Menil. Mark Rothko worked closely with architects Philip Johnson, Howard Barnstone, and Eugene Aubry to design the structure, which houses fourteen of his large-scale paintings. The building itself is an octagonal brick structure, designed to provide a specific environment for the contemplation of the canvases housed within.

Rothko began the commission in 1964, producing a series of dark, monochromatic panels that explore the interaction between light and shadow. The paintings are characterised by their subtle shifts in tone, often appearing black at first glance but revealing deep purples, browns, and blues under sustained observation. The chapel serves as a site-specific installation where the architecture dictates the viewer's experience of the art. The natural light entering through the central skylight changes throughout the day, altering the perception of the paintings and the surrounding space.

This print captures the exterior of the chapel, showing the austere, geometric form of the building against the surrounding grounds. The design reflects Rothko's desire for a space that could accommodate quiet reflection, removed from the distractions of the outside world. The chapel remains a significant example of the intersection between modern architecture and abstract painting, where the physical environment is as much a part of the work as the art itself. The exterior view provides a sense of the scale and the deliberate simplicity that defines the project, offering a glimpse into the atmosphere that Rothko intended for his final major commission.

Mark Rothko portrait

Artist Biography

Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz in Latvia in 1903, remains one of the most significant figures in abstract expressionism. While many associate him with colour field painting, Rothko resisted such categorisation, insisting his works were about profound human emotions: tragedy, ecstasy, and doom. He sought to create paintings that resonated with viewers on a deeply personal, almost spiritual level, often drawing inspiration from mythology and philosophy.

Rothko's artistic journey evolved from early figurative works to his signature style of large, luminous rectangles of colour. These weren't mere exercises in aesthetics; Rothko intended them to be immersive experiences. He meticulously controlled the lighting and viewing conditions of his exhibitions, wanting viewers to be enveloped by the canvases and to contemplate their own existence. Famously, Rothko was commissioned to create murals for the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York, but he ultimately withdrew from the project, feeling it was inappropriate for such a setting.

Tragically, Mark Rothko's life ended in suicide in 1970, but his legacy endures. His paintings continue to captivate and challenge audiences, prompting introspection and emotional responses. Rothko's works, such as "Orange, Red, Yellow", are not just paintings; they are invitations to contemplate the human condition. His art remains a powerful testament to the expressive potential of abstract form.
