A 1907 Neo-Impressionist oil painting by Paul Signac, depicting the industrial activity of Rotterdam Harbour through a mosaic of colour.
Paul Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, painted this view of Rotterdam Harbour in 1907. During this period, Signac moved away from the smaller, tighter dots of his earlier work, adopting a more expansive, mosaic-like application of paint. This technique, often termed divisionism, relies on the optical mixing of colours placed side by side on the canvas.
The composition captures the industrial activity of the Dutch port. Steamships and smaller vessels navigate the water, while a large bridge spans the background. Signac uses a palette dominated by blues, greens, and soft pinks to render the atmospheric conditions of the harbour. The smoke rising from the ships is depicted with light, airy touches of colour, contrasting with the more structured, rhythmic strokes used to define the water and the architectural elements of the bridge.
Signac travelled extensively along the coasts of Europe, and his fascination with maritime subjects provided a consistent theme for his experiments with light and colour. In this work, the focus remains on the interplay between the man-made structures of the port and the shifting quality of light over the water. The lack of rigid outlines allows the scene to appear fluid, as if the entire composition is in a state of constant motion. By applying paint in larger, rectangular blocks, Signac creates a surface that possesses a distinct texture, drawing the viewer's attention to the physical application of pigment as much as the subject matter itself. This approach reflects his interest in the scientific theories of colour perception that informed the Neo-Impressionist movement.
