A study of a resting tiger by French Romantic master Eugène Delacroix, rendered in delicate watercolour and graphite.
Ferdinand-Victor-Eugène Delacroix held a lifelong fascination with big cats, often visiting the Jardin des Plantes in Paris to observe them at close quarters. This study of a resting tiger demonstrates his ability to capture the anatomy and temperament of the animal through fluid watercolour washes and precise graphite marks. Unlike his more dramatic, action-oriented compositions, this work presents the tiger in a state of repose, allowing for a focus on the texture of the fur and the subtle musculature beneath the skin.
The palette remains restrained, relying on earthy ochres, browns, and muted greys to ground the figure within its environment. The background, featuring a suggestion of distant, hazy mountains, provides a sense of scale without distracting from the primary subject. Delacroix uses the transparency of the medium to build depth, layering washes to define the shadow and light across the tiger's flank. The signature in the lower right corner confirms the artist's hand, typical of his smaller, observational studies that informed his larger oil paintings.
This piece offers a glimpse into the working methods of a leading figure of the French Romantic movement. Delacroix did not merely document the animal; he interpreted its presence with a sensitivity to form and light. The composition is balanced, with the horizontal orientation of the tiger echoing the gentle slope of the terrain. It remains a fine example of nineteenth-century animalier art, where the observation of nature served as a primary source of inspiration for the artist's creative output. The print captures these delicate tonal shifts, ensuring the quality of the original paper and pigment application is preserved for display.
