Description
Royston appears across Hertfordshire fields as a leafy town of red roofs and a prominent church tower, its wide rural horizon recalling the settlement's ancient crossroads setting.
On Hertfordshire's northern edge, Royston developed where the Roman Ermine Street crossed the older Icknield Way. That junction also gives context to Royston Cave, whose underground chamber lies at the meeting of the two historic routes beneath the modern town.
The view here looks across a sunlit grassy slope towards red and slate roofs. A pale square church tower rises near the middle, surrounded by dense trees. Beyond the houses, hedged fields stretch to a low blue horizon under tall white clouds. Full green foliage suggests summer, and the elevated viewpoint emphasises the countryside around the town rather than its streets.
