A cityscape by Maurice Utrillo, 'Rue Saint-Rustique, Montmartre' captures a quiet street scene in the Montmartre district of Paris, with the Sacré-Cœur Basilica visible in the distance.
Maurice Utrillo, born in Paris in 1883, is celebrated for his paintings of Montmartre, the Parisian district where he spent much of his life. Utrillo's style evolved through several periods, but he is best known for his 'white period' (c. 1909-1914), characterised by the use of white paint, often mixed with plaster, to create textured surfaces that evoke the weathered facades of Parisian buildings. His work captures the atmosphere of the city streets with a unique blend of realism and subjective expression. 'Rue Saint-Rustique, Montmartre' exemplifies Utrillo's cityscapes. The painting depicts a narrow street ascending towards the Sacré-Cœur Basilica, which is visible in the distance. The buildings on either side of the street are rendered with a muted palette of whites, greys, and browns, accented by dark windows and shutters. The brushwork is loose and expressive, contributing to the painting's overall sense of spontaneity. Touches of yellow-green foliage add a subtle contrast to the predominantly cool tones of the composition. The perspective draws the viewer into the scene, inviting contemplation of the quiet, almost deserted street.
